As a member of the interprofessional team, the Occupational Therapist provides expertise in occupational engagement using a strength-based approach and recovery model principles. Expertise is provided in applying effective intervention strategies that contribute to the optimal activity health and engagement of individuals who experience a serious mental illness including maximizing self-sufficiency, societal integration, focus on wellness and improved health status and engagement in meaningful occupation. The Occupational Therapist also contributes to the development of comprehensive person-centered assessment and treatment plans; and provides service coordination for an assigned group of clients that includes providing a range of treatment, rehabilitation and support services.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy; Master’s Degree preferred
- Current, unrestricted registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
- Minimum one-year work experience providing services to adults with a serious mental illness in an inpatient psychiatric setting, preferred
Role Responsibilities
- Develops individual supportive therapy and symptom management, ensuring immediate changes are made in the treatment plans as client’s needs change, educating and supporting client’s families, and advocating for client’s rights and preferences
- Participates in and conducts client-centred assessment of mental status, physical health and dental health
- Acts as liaison and consults with community agencies and families to maintain coordination in the treatment process
- Engages in daily organization of client related activities in collaboration with other team members
- Delivers ongoing assessment of client’s mental illness symptoms and client’s response to treatment. Makes appropriate changes in treatment plan to ensure immediate and appropriate interventions are provided in response to changes in mental status or behaviour
- Facilitates symptom education to enable clients to identify their mental illness symptoms, and target the symptoms and occurrence patterns of his or her mental illness, developing methods (internal, behavioural, or adaptive) to help lessen the effects
